Rectitude or Justice (義) → Rectitude is the power of deciding upon a certain course of conduct in accordance with reason, without wavering; to die when it is right to die, to strike when to strike is right. Courage, the Spirit of Daring or Bearing (勇) → Courage is doing what is right. To run all kinds of hazards, to jeopardize one’s self, to rush into the jaws of death. It is true courage to live when it is right to live. Benevolence, the Feeling of Distress (仁) → Mercy is recognized in due regard to justice, and mercy does not remain merely a certain state of mind, but an action where it is backed with power to save or kill. Politeness (礼) → Politeness is a poor virtue if it is actuated only by a fear of offending good taste. It should be the outward manifestation of a sympathetic regard for the feelings of others. Veracity and Sincerity (誠) → Sincerity is the end and the beginning of all things; without it there is nothing. Words carry such weight that promises are made and fulfilled without a written pledge. Honor (誉) → The sense of honor, implying a vivid consciousness of personal dignity and worth. Fame, and not wealth or knowledge, is the goal toward which a samurai should strive. The Duty of Loyalty (忠) → Bushido does not require the conscience be made the slave of any lord or king, though life is regarded as the means whereby to serve a master, when that master is chosen. |
